It’s been a while since I shared a video tutorial that I found helpful or cool. 2D painting time-lapse: Owner is by super talented digital artist Henning Ludvigsen. Check out his web site for more awesome art and tutorials.

Ludvigsen creates photo-realistic fantasy and sci fi paintings and concept art. He was the first artist to open my eyes to the technique of starting off with a grayscale rendering of your picture, and adding color on top of that. When I paint realistically, I find this technique is super helpful. It’s faster (for me), and I’m able to work out my lights and darks easier. He demonstrates his grayscale-first technique in the video tutorial of his painting, “Owner” (see below).

I’m a huge Don Bluth fan. For those of you who don’t know, he’s an animator and the director behind several hit animated movies including “An American Tail,” “All Dogs Go To Heaven,” “The Secret of NIMH,” “Anastasia,” and the classic arcade game, “Dragon’s Lair.”

Now he’s got a YouTube account where he’s uploaded several videos of him drawing characters from his movies. Better still, he narrates as he goes.

Here’s an example of one of his videos. In it, Bluth draws Dirk and the dragon Singe from “Dragon’s Lair.” He shows you how he sets up the sketch, and as he goes through the drawing, he talks about using action in your composition, adding character details and more.

And in this video tutorial, Bluth draws a scene from the classic video game, “Space Ace.” Bluth describes the thinking process behind the character design of Kimberly and the Video Guard.

Look how fluidly he sketches in Kimberly’s limbs. I know he’s drawn her a million times and doesn’t need construction lines, but look at how much curve and movement he puts into the line of her leg. That is drawing gold!

You can view all of Don Bluth’s YouTube videos by visiting http://www.youtube.com/user/DonBluthProductions.

Now I’m off to devour all his videos.

Interested in learning about more of Don Bluth’s art and techniques? Check out his book, Don Bluth’s Art Of Storyboard. I’ve got it, and even though I’m not an animator, I found it an interesting read. Much of what he discusses in animation, translates into illustration as well.

Need to know how to digitally paint gold armor? I needed a refresher today so I popped over to YouTube and found this awesome tutorial by IDrawGirls. What was most interesting about this particular tutorial for me is the artist’s comments on how light affects your painting. He references one of my gods, John Singer Sargent, which I give him even more props for. Also, his use of cool lights and warm shadows, and his comments on that are fantastic.

I’m always on the hunt for new tutorials, and I especially love watching other artists work. Every day more and more artists are putting up video tutorials and painting demos on YouTube, and I thought I’d start sharing with you guys the ones that I find especially interesting or enlightening.

This Bougereau Style painting by Raffy Dematawaran was interesting to me for a couple reasons. First, I’m a big fan of the old masters, so the style was an instant draw. But watch especially closely the way the artist uses colors to draw and shade with. Purple to draw the lids of the eyes, a greenish brown for some shadows, etc.
