Doing it Old School

May 12th, 2010 by karynlewis

For many reasons I’ve decided that I need to start doing more traditional art again. I thought it might be fun for you guys to follow along as I try and relearn traditional techniques I haven’t used in many, many years. Like watercolors for example.

I did this drawing of an American Robin drawing (5×7 in) on Watercolor paper this afternoon, and I’d like to lay in some washes of color. Nothing hardcore, just tint it a bit. And I’m terrified! I haven’t used watercolors in more than 20 years it seems like. At one time I was fairly proficient. I hope it comes back to me quickly. However, in case I totally mess up, I’ve scanned in the drawing for Photoshop coloring later.

Here’s the pencils. I’ll post the aftermath of my colors later. :D

(hey, at least I remembered to tape off my edges! lol)

Yup. Made that a couple years ago now, drew it in Photoshop.

It can be so rewarding to work in watercolors/gouache. I prefer gouache, the pigments are so saturated. I am looking forward to see how the ‘robin’ looks when your done.
